You have given your notice. You are happy and excited about the position at the new company and then unexpectedly your current employer makes a counter offer. While this may be very flattering and your employer may ask you the question “What would it take to make you stay?”
The important fact that you should remember is “Why was I leaving to begin with?” If you stay, in 6 months will you be unhappy and begin looking for another job. Probably even more importantly, the employee that accepts a counter offer is usually gone within 1 year.
The moment you gave your boss notice he felt that he had not done his job. If he was a “good boss” you would not be leaving. Your boss may also realize that you are going to leave a void that may not be easily filled right away. He/she may not have an immediate plan and that will make him/her give you what you want to stay. There will be a ripple affect if you stay.
The problem from this point on is that your loyalty to the company will be in question. His/her knee jerk reaction is to do what has to be done to keep you from leaving until he/she is ready to let you go. He/she will feel like this is a situation that they should have control over. Your boss will begin making a plan in case you leave. He will begin looking at other people to see if they will be able to step into your position. It is more than likely that you will not be considered for a promotion for some time. Your co-workers will resent the fact that you were given extra perks to stay.
It has been said that accepting a counter offer is Career Suicide.
